Bali

HISTORY

Bali, an Indonesian island is the largest tourist destination in the country and is well-known for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music. Bali is one of 17,508 islands that compose the country, Indonesia. The legends say descendants of a prehistoric race who migrated through mainland Asia to the Indonesian archipelago, thought to have first settled in Bali around 3000 BC. Bali's highest peak, Mount Agung (3.142 meters) is considered to be the center of the universe and also the home of the Gods. The people in Bali believe that the ocean is home to many spiritual forces and only that has kept the island almost free of outside influence from the years 1600 to 1900. Much of the unique dance, music and art we see on Bali today were developed and refined during this period, primary to honor the large number of gods and kings here. Bali is, a paradise land, the ultimate island, a land of a thousand gods, thousand temples and even known a land of thousand dances. Balinese art is very unique; of which gamelan music is highly developed and varied. As said before they are also very famous for their varied contemporary dance arts. Balinese dances portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana. Some of the famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, and kecak (the monkey dance). Balinese culture has a crucial influence of predominant Indian religious beliefs. This is proved with the fact that during a prehistoric time; the people of the Indonesian Archipelago followed the ways of animism and ancestor worship. By around 600 AD, Indian ideas and beliefs began to spread throughout Southeast Asia. Both Buddhism and Hinduism became active force on the islands of Sumatra and Java. Hindus found Bali as their ideal locality for their community. During the course of history Bali has undergone various invasions, to form what Bali is now. Bali is very welcoming to the whole world. The people in Bali are known for their art. In the olden times the Balinese language has no words for "art" and "artist". It is said that, the habitants in Bali always had the essence of artistic nature in them as an inborn identity. All the regular work they do, it can be defined as a perfect work of art. This was factual that in the olden days, the majority of Bali's artists are extremely skilled craftsmen, who learned their skill by mastering the traditional forms inherited from their forefathers. They had the touch of beauty in all the services they do. Every single person who crafts a work, he neither signed his name to his work, nor received money for his labor. This was because his key aim was to serve his community. Everyone in this world, who intends finding the perfect artistic spot to unwind, Bali would be their perfect one stop destination.
