Okavango
Delta
Nature enthusiasts
call the Okavango Delta Africa's
last paradise. The Okavango
Delta is the world's largest
unspoilt Delta. Fed by the Okavango
River, which origins in the
highlands of Angola as the Cubango.
A prosperity of wildlife including
a mere 400 species of birds,
make the Okavango Delta with
its Moremi Game Reserve to one
of the best wilderness areas
in Southern Africa.
The camps and lodges in the
Delta vary in their offer of
activities. Some lodges are
situated on an island, offering
mainly mokoro excurions (the
traditional dug-out canoe) and
guided walks. Other camps have
a variety of activities on offer,
such as game drives, night drives,
guided walks, mokoros and motor
boating.
Chobe
National Park
Chobe National Park has one
of the greatest concentrations
of game found on the African
continent. The highest density
of elephants worldwide makes
this region a "must-see"
on every Botswana holiday. Estimations
say there are more than 120.000
elephants in Chobe. Birdlife
is also spectacular along the
river. You have the choice between
comfortable hotels in Kasane,
luxurious lodges in the National
Park or in its surroundings
or join a mobile safari to explore
the area.
Central Kalahari
Larger than Denmark or Switzerland,
and bigger than Lesotho and
Swaziland combined, the 52.800
sqkm Central Kalahari Game Reserve,
which was set up in 1961, is
the second largest game reserve
in the world. Situated right
in the centre of Botswana, this
reserve is characterised by
vast open plains, saltpans and
ancient riverbeds. Varying from
sand dunes with many species
of trees and shrubs in the north,
to flat bushveld in the central
area, the reserve is more heavily
wooded in the south, with mophane
forests to the south and east.
The Kalahari is at its most
beautiful during the rainy season
months of December to April.
During this time wildlife like
springbok, oryx, lion, brown
hyena are congretated in the
pans and valleys.
Moremi Game Reserve
The Moremi Game Reserve is known
as one of the best wilderness
areas in Africa. It boasts with
a beautiful variety of landscapes,
dry savannas, Okavango Delta
channels and wetlands. Moremi
covers some 4,871 kms, as the
eastern section of the Okavango
Delta. It combines mopane and
acacia forests with floodplains
and lagoons. The wide range
of habitats in Moremi makes
it to a paradise for wildlife.
Birdlife is prolific and varied,
mammals such as elephants and
buffalos can be found in large
herds. The rare wild dog is
often sighted in Moremi. Lion,
leopard, cheetah and hyena as
well as many different antelope
such as red lechwe can be found
in Moremi.
Makgadikgadi &
Nxai Pan National Parks
The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Salt
Pans were once an ancient great
lake in central Botswana. The
pans fill once a year with water
and attract huge herds of animals
to the area. During rainy season
flamingos, herds of zebra and
gnu can be seen in this vast
and beautiful landscape.
