Machame
Route
DAY 1:
Arrival in Nairobi
International airport transfer
to Arusha in a private vehicle
alight at Agurdoto Junction
a few kms out of Arusha where
you will be transferred to Mr
Colobus Village.
DAY 2:
Early breakfast, then
transfer to Machame gate and
start the climb by walking through
the rainforest and giant heathers
to Machame camp. Overnight in
tents.
DAY 3:
Today we leave the
glades of the rain forest and
continue on an ascending path,
crossing the little valley walking
along a steep rocky ridge, covered
with heather, until the ridge
ends. Destination being Shira
Camp. Overnight in tents.
DAY 4: After
breakfast, we start climb from
Shira Plateau as we continue
to the east, passing the junction
towards the peak of Kibo. As
we continue, our direction changes
to the South East towards the
Lava Tower, called the "Shark's
Tooth." Shortly after the
tower, we come to the second
junction which brings us up
to the Arrow Glacier, arrival
at Baranco Camp. Overnight in
tents.
DAY 5: After
breakfast, we leave Barranco
and continue on a steep ridge
passing the Barranco Wall and
walk uphill through the Karanga
Valley with a few boulders and
rocks. Overnight in tents.
DAY 6: After
breakfast proceed uphill, climb
barren landscapes with lots
of boulders and shattered rocks.
You will see the Dickens glaciers
as the trails become steeper.
Arrive in Barafu Camp. Overnight
in tents.
DAY 7: Early
breakfast, we continue our way
to the summit of Uhuru Peak
.This part of the climb takes
about 6 hours. It can be very
cold at night at these elevations
but warm by the end of the hiking
day. You will want clothing
for both extremes with you.
At Uhuru Peak, the highest point
on Mount Kilimanjaro and the
continent of Africa, hikers
will see the sunrise from the
summit. We make our descent
continuing straight down to
the Mweka Hut. Later in the
evening, we enjoy our last dinner
on the mountain and a well-earned
sleep. Overnight in tents.
DAY 8: After
breakfast start hike down to
Mweka gate, at lower elevations,
it can be wet , muddy and slippery.
Gaiters and trekking poles will
be most helpful. You will be
picked and transferred to Colobus
Mt. Village. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 9: After
breakfast transfer to Nairobi
in a private vehicle and then
to the airport for your flight
back home.
