Marungu
Route
DAY 1:
Arrival in Nairobi
International airport transfer
to Arusha in a private vehicle
alight at Agurdoto Junction
a few kms out of Arusha where
you will be transferred to Mr
Colobus Village.
DAY 2:
Leave early morning
to Marangu gate, where the climb
starts. Register and commence
the climb. The walk passes throught
the lush vegetation of the mountain
rain forest to mandara hut (2700
m) This covers 8 kms and takes
about 3-4 hours. Overnight in
tents.
DAY 3:
Second day walk covers
about 15 Km (5 - 7 hrs).We will
leave the glades of the rainforest
and follow an ascending path
on the open moorlands onto the
grasslands leading to Horombo
Hut (3750M). Overnight in tents.
DAY 4: A hard
day's climb to Kibo hut (4700M)
cover 13 Km; 6 - 7 hours crossing
terrain of the saddle between
Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Vegetation
all but disappears into "moonscape",
but the views of the mountain
are incredible. Here take a
chance to relax as the next
stage begins shortly after midnight
, ascending to the summit "Uhuru
Peak" (5895M). Overnight
in tents.
DAY 5: Enjoy
the sunrise at the summit, the
Uhuru Peak, which is the highest
point in Africa and descend
to Horombo Hut for dinner and
overnight. The beginning of
this climb is done in the dark
and requires headlamps or flashlights.
It will be very cold until you
start descending, so you will
need all of your warm layers.
This is, by far, the most difficult
part of the trek with many switchbacks
and an optimistic attitude will
get you there. Overnight in
tents.
DAY 6: From
Horombo Hut descend further
to Marangu gate, successful
climbers may collect their certificates.
You will be picked and transferred
to Colobus Mt. Village. Dinner
and overnight.
DAY 7: After
breakfast transfer to Nairobi
in a private vehicle and then
to the airport for your flight
back home.
